HHO Consulting Engineers played a key role in transforming this critical piece of infrastructure
That was a landmark project indeed! Outstanding infrastructure that continues to serve Cape Town every single day. We are proud that Civil Designer played a role in HHO Consulting Engineers‘ journey in delivering this complex, award-winning upgrade. Here’s to engineering excellence that stands the test of time!

“A look back at the Koeberg Interchange
One of Cape Town’s busiest road junctions was once one of its biggest traffic headaches. At the intersection of the N1 and M5, the Koeberg Interchange carried around 200,000 vehicles every day, with congestion becoming increasingly severe as the city grew.
HHO Consulting Engineers played a key role in transforming this critical piece of infrastructure. Our teams were responsible for the conceptual design, traffic analysis and evaluation of alternative upgrade proposals, as well as the structural design and construction supervision of two new flyover viaducts totalling 1.3 km in length.
The project introduced two major directional ramps, allowing traffic to move directly between the N1 and M5 without having to negotiate the existing interchange at ground level. The structures incorporated a combination of simply supported and continuous box girders, as well as precast post-tensioned T- and U-beams.
But building bridges over one of Cape Town’s busiest interchanges came with its own engineering challenge: keeping the traffic moving while construction took place. Precast beams were installed at night, when road closures would cause the least disruption to motorists.
The scale and complexity of the project earned it widespread recognition, including SAICE Regional and Technical Excellence Awards, a CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Award, and Construction World’s Best Projects award.
More than a decade later, the Koeberg Interchange remains a striking example of HHO’s ability to combine traffic engineering, structural design and construction expertise to deliver infrastructure that keeps Cape Town moving.
A landmark project then. A landmark piece of infrastructure today.” – HHO Consulting Engineers,2026
